Calvert County Historical Society
Description
The Calvert County Historical Society was founded in 1953 for the sole purpose of furthering the collection of historical data and records that tells the story of Calvert County’s history. This would include public and private documents as well as materials recording significant people, places, and events in the County’s past. Through the years the Historical Society has been fortunate to obtain a substantial compilation of documents and momentous artifacts that interpret and illustrate Calvert County’s History. Today, our collection includes a library offering more than 3,000 titles of published and unpublished materials on local, regional, and family history. Our archives contain valuable records, documents, genealogies, wills, Bibles, publications, and oral/video histories. The Calvert County Historical Society is a nonprofit 501© (3) entity. Our mission is to collect, preserve, research, and share the history of Calvert County.
The Historical Society partnered with the Calvert County branch of the NAACP and Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum on a project to preserve the oral histories of African Americans in Calvert County. Several African Americans were interviewed. A substantial amount of invaluable history was captured via a licensed videographer. Each interview can be found on the Calvert County Historical Society’s website. Aside from the providing oral histories we have files on African American families of Calvert County, African American Schools, colored troops, runaway slave ads, U.S. Federal Census slave schedules, African American Historic sites surveys, church registers, and Calvert County African American depositors from Fredman’s Bank.
