African American Monument in Elmer Brown Freedom Park
July 29, 2000 a dream became a reality. The newly erected St. Mary’s County African American Monument was dedicated. The monument is surrounded by six pedestals with bronze plaques and engraved bricks surround to say thank you to the people who paved the way for them. The St. Mary’s County Commissioners unanimously approved naming Freedom Park in Lexington Park after a prominent citizen, Elmer Brown. The commissioners agreed to rename the park, Elmer Brown Freedom Park on June 21, 2014.
