The settlers arrived on March 25,1634, landing first on St. Clement’s Island. They found it unsuitable for a permanent settlement, so the English leaders, including Father Andrew White, met with the Piscataway, and negotiated for thirty acres of land on which to settle. In exchange, the English presented them with axes, hatchets, hoes, and some cloth, to prevent any feelings of ill will or misunderstanding.
