Kittamaquund, the Piscataway Tayac, asked Father Andrew White to baptize him along with his wife and daughters. Other Piscataway leaders followed his example and decided to become Christians as well. Father Andrew White performed the baptism on July 5, 1640, in the presence of Governor Leonard Calvert and other Maryland officials. Those being baptized chose Christian names as part of the ritual.
