The Navigation Acts of 1651 & 1660

Timeline

The series of navigation acts were passed by Parliament to promote self-sufficiency within the British empire by restricting colonial trade to England. All goods had to be carried on English ships; all goods imported into the colonies had to pass through ports in England; specific goods could only be exported to England from the colonies. To survive, a large labor force was needed, which meant an increase in the number of enslaved people in the colony.
