Description
Drayden African American Schoolhouse is one of the best-preserved African American schoolhouses in the country, the one-room schoolhouse was carefully rehabilitated on its original site and has not been significantly altered.
Built around 1890, it continued in use until 1944. Exhibits at the schoolhouse explore the stories of struggle of the St. Mary’s County African American community during an era of segregated education.
Available resources include: oral histories with students who attended school here, as well as descendants of both teachers and students; documents showing schedules, student’s names and grades, and other official records of the school. Tours available seasonally and on-demand; interpretive panels available year-round; other resources available upon request.
