Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray becomes first African American Woman Episcopal Priest

Timeline

Pauli Murray was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1910 and pioneered her way through college, law school, and seminary. She co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966 and argued the unconstitutionality of “separate but equal” as a lawyer. In 1977 Murray changed direction and decided to dedicate her life to Christ. She served at St. Phillip’s Chapel in Aquasco (as had her father 50 years earlier) as a seminarian before being ordained at the National Cathedral as the first African American woman Episcopal Priest.
