First Catholic school for African Americans opened in St. Mary’s County

The first Catholic school for African Americans in St. Mary’s County was the Saint Inigoes Colored Parochial School. It met at St. Jerome’s Hall starting in 1887. It closed a few years later and was replaced by St. Peter Claver Catholic School, which opened in 1916.
