In 1902, land was purchased by one of the oldest Black secret society – Trustees of Tabernacle No. 47 of the Society of Galilean Fisherman. This benevolent society was founded in Baltimore in 1856. The Calvert County chapter had education as its priority. The group purchased a tract of land in 1902, which became the site of the first Rosenwald School in Calvert County in 1921. The Rosenwald schools were built throughout the rural south through a philanthropic collaboration between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald.
