Drayden African American One Room Schoolhouse established

The Drayden African American Schoolhouse was one of three serving African American families in the Valley Lee district. It was open from 1890 through 1942, for students from 1st through 7th grade. William B. Thompson was the first teacher and Carrie Tilghman Statesman was the last. There was no high school for African Americans in St. Mary’s County until 1934.
