St. Mary’s Historical Society: County School Records

History

St. Mary’s County School Records: St. Mary’s County School Records. The SMCHS has the school records of the St. Mary’s County School System ranging from 1867 to 1945. This, among other things, included school district financial records, teacher salaries, and attendance records for both white and African American schools in St. Mary’s county during this time. Of particular note are ledgers where one can see the names and salaries of teachers in African American and white schools, as well as the salary difference between them, and attendance records showing the names of all teachers and students in the district at the time. These records contain valuable information regarding African American schools in the County over a long period of time, and contribute a greater understanding of African American history in Southern Maryland.
