William A. Diggs

Charles County educator and founder of the African American Museum

William Diggs educator, promoted Afro-American history.

William A. Diggs attended Chicamuxen Elementary School and Pomonkey High School in Charles County both schools for “colored students” during segregation. After graduation, his mother felt he needed additional education and sent him to Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. Upon graduation he attended Bowie State Teachers College, earning his teaching degree. He began his teaching career at Bel Alton High School in Charles County.

Being one of the first life members of the Charles County Branch of the NAACP and a co-founder of the African American Heritage Society of Charles County, he founded the African American Museum. He was instrumental in preserving and moving the McConchie One-Room School to the Charles County Fairgrounds. Upon retirement from the Charles County school system, he spent his time traveling across the county and state talking about African American History in Charles County. William A. Diggs Elementary school in Charles County is named in his honor.
