The Historic Sotterley Descendants’ Project

The mission of the Descendant’s Project is to grow an official registry of all people whose ancestry is connected to the site’s 300-year history, whether enslavers, the enslaved, workers and, free and allied families.

The project began with descendant trailblazers Agnes Kane Callum and John Hanson Briscoe who built a strong foundation and set a tone for the Descendant program which was formalized in 2017. The descendants are involved in all aspects of Historic Sotterley as they model how people of different backgrounds and experiences can together foster understanding and healing.
