Indigenous communities have existed in the Chesapeake Bay area since the early Archaic period. Captain John Smith traveled and mapped the Bay and its tributaries during four voyages between 1607 and 1609. He encountered more than 200 Native settlements along the way. His map, which was published in 1612, stood as the most detailed and accurate map of the area until 1637.
