According to the 1860 census, the total population in Calvert County was 10,447. Of these, 6,139 were Black (4,609 enslaved; 1,530 free), which equals 58.7% of the total population. Of the Blacks, 4,609 were enslaved and 1,530 were free. In St. Mary’s County the total population was 15,213. Of these, 8,415 were Black (6,549 enslaved; 1,866 free), which equals 55.3% of the total population. In Charles County the total population was 16,517. Of these, 10,721 were Black (9,653 enslaved; 1,068 free), which equals 64.9% of the total population
