First African American elected to St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners

John G. Lancaster, for whom Lancaster Park is named, ran for a seat on the St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners in 1982, but was not elected. He came back and made a successful run in 1986, becoming the first African American elected to the post. He was reelected for a second term in 1990.
