The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 strengthened the original law of 1793. It required that freedom seekers be returned to their owners without due process of law. It also penalized anyone who did not comply and created an entire industry for slave catchers and kidnappers. It was repealed in June 1864. Many unsuccessful freedom seekers and their accomplices were held in jail in Leonardtown. There was also much activity throughout Southern Maryland on the Underground Railroad.
