The Piscataway and other Native Peoples arrived in Maryland more than 10,000 years ago, and still live here today. Much of their tribal land was lost to the English over time, but at the end of the 19th century they began exerting their native identity again and demanding recognition as a people. On January 9, 2012, the State of Maryland officially recognized the Piscataway Conoy Tribe’s Maryland Indian status and reestablished a long dormant native government.
