The Maryland Colonization Society was formed in 1818, as a chapter of the American colonization Society. It folded and then returned in 1831 with a plan to send 10,000 free and enslaved Blacks to the Republic of Maryland, located just below Liberia. Only 1,025 people actually immigrated. The project ultimately failed, and the Republic was annexed by Liberia in 1857.
