On Easter Monday 1817 over 150 enslaved and free black men and women gathered at the St. Inigoes’ store and staged a rebellion to gain their freedom. When the constable and his men attempted to break up the gathering it became violent and many of the whites were injured by sticks and bricks. Four of the insurrectionists were arrested that same night while others were able to elude capture for many days.
