The Royal African Company’s ship Generous Jenny was the first documented middle passage ship to deliver enslaved Africans directly to Sotterley. Some were purchased by Sotterley’s owner, James Bowles, and other were sold on further south. At least twenty-nine people were lost in the middle passage and over 260 came to be enslaved.
