The Freedmen’s Bureau was established

Timeline

The Freedmen’s Bureau helped establish schools for Black children to protect them from postwar violence and abusive labor practices. John Butler guided the building project which included these three schools in Calvert County: Plum Point, Mt. Hope, and St. Edmonds. A total of 11 schools were set to be built by the Bureau in each county. In St. Mary’s County there were also two government-run farms that employed freed men and women.
