The St. Mary’s County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was approved by the national organization in 1946. Along with the overall mission to uplift the colored men and women of the country, the local chapter took on the additional mission of improving the conditions of the local African American schools. It was started by Stephen Young who served as its first president.
