Naval Amphibious Training Base Solomons was the first naval amphibious training base in the United States. It was established in 1942 and closed in 1945 after training 67,698 men. Although the naval presence bolstered the local economy, it also disrupted the local fishing industry, destroyed oyster beds, and displaced many African Americans in Solomons and on the Dowell peninsula.
